On September 11, 2001, terrorists from the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in the United States. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing their collapse, while a third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake control from the hijackers.
