DC Transit was the primary public transportation provider in Washington, D.C., from 1956 to 1973. It succeeded the Capital Transit Company and operated streetcars and buses. In 1973, the DC Transit system was acquired by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), marking the transition to the modern Metrobus and eventually the Metrorail system.
